Our story begins with a little red raincoat—worn by Janet Odham the first time she caught the eye of Austin Guthrie in downtown Swansboro. What started as a young romance in a small coastal town blossomed into a decades-long partnership in life and business. Married in 1958, Austin and Janet raised three children—Darlene, Buddy, and Janelle — instilling in them the same drive and entrepreneurial spirit that would shape the Guthrie family's lasting presence in Cedar Point and beyond.

Austin’s journey from plowing behind a mule to founding a successful retail enterprise is a testament to resilience and vision. After serving in the Army and studying electronics in Chicago, he returned home and worked at Camp Lejeune while launching his own repair business out of his basement. With Janet’s support, he founded Sound Electronics, which eventually grew into Sound Furniture and Appliance. Over the years, Austin expanded into several ventures, including the beloved Frostee Treat, a doctor’s office, and commercial rentals. A natural risk-taker in business, Austin’s efforts laid the groundwork for a multi-generational family enterprise.

Today, the Guthrie family businesses remain firmly rooted in community values and family dedication. Buddy, who took over Sound Furniture, served as Mayor of Cedar Point—following in his father’s footsteps—and continues to lead the business alongside his wife Patti and their children. Janel runs Sound Ace Hardware in Emerald Isle, while grandchildren work in various roles across the family’s ventures. What began with a chance meeting and a strong work ethic has grown into a legacy of service, integrity, and family pride that spans generations.
